Sensei Dean Clerc

Dean Clerc (pronounced Clair) is the son of Gene and Arlene Clerc of Prairie du Rocher, Illinois. Dean's first involvement in the martial arts took place twelve years ago. He has a 1st degree black belt in Kenpo Karate and has received training in the Joe Lewis Fighting System. Dean was the head sparring instructor for several years at the Tracy Martial Arts Studio in St. Peters, Missouri.

The author has benefited greatly from his exposure to a wide variety of martial arts ranging from aikido, isshinryu, jeet kune do, jujutsu, kickboxing, muay thai boxing, shotokan, tae kwon do, etc. This broad experience base has allowed himself to establish his own ideas regarding how to effectively apply basic self-defense principles during realistic situations. The subject matter in his book relates the core principles that Sensei Clerc believes are necessary in order for anyone who has a true passion for learning to acquire a deeper sense of meaning and purpose from their own involvement in the martial arts.

The MINDSET of a MARTIAL ARTIST continues to have a positive impact on those who read it. Readers who live as far away as Aarau, Switzerland have traveled to the United States to meet the author. Dean was very pleased and honored to train with Thomas Wehrli and Marcel Wyss during their visit. Shown below are several pictures taken of Thomas and Marcel while training with the author.

Articles written by the Mr. Clerc have appeared in several martial art magazines. Each of his articles, such as "Expanding Awareness", "Countering Broken Rythmn", and "Martial Ability" expand on the subject matter in his book and are posted occasionally on this web site. An audiobook version of The MINDSET of a MARTIAL ARTIST is in the works.

Interviews with the author have aired on WJIB-AM in Cambridge, Massachusetts, WNEA-AM in Atlanta, Georgia, WAPS-FM in Akron, Ohio, WOLB-AM in Baltimore, Maryland, KHIS-AM in Bakersfield, California, KDAL-AM in Duluth, Minnesota, WTMY-AM in Sarasota, Florida, KIT-AM in Yakima, Washington, CFRA-AM in Ottawa, Ontario, and CJAD-AM in Montreal, Quebec. At some point in the future, one of these interviews will be digitized and placed on this web page for those who would like to hear more from the author. In the meantime, here are several old training videos that illustrate some basic self defense exercises: VIDEO 1, VIDEO 2, VIDEO 3. Real Player is needed to play the videos. These videos play best when using either a cable or DSL connection.

A question that is commonly asked during interviews with the author is: "Who would benefit most from reading your book?". The answer: "Anyone who has a passion for learning and who is actively seeking to acquire a deeper sense of meaning and purpose from their involvement in the martial arts.". Another common question: "Would someone who has no martial arts experience also benefit from reading your book?". The answer: "Absolutely. Heightening one's level of awareness of their surroundings, learning to read body language, maintaining your focus/composure during the most extreme of situations, understanding the role that ego and emotion play in conflict resolution, etc. are matters that apply to everyone.........regardless if the reader has experience in the martial arts or not.". And the most common question of all is: "Why did you write the book?". The answer is simply: "To inspire independent inquiry and self-reliance.".
